PackTrim Optimization™ Program

Trim the waste from your packaging.

The PackTrim Optimization Program from Wisconsin Lumber & Pallet is unique. This program allows us to work as an independent 3rd party between your business and your current packaging vendor to trim the waste out of your packaging.

This service is for companies that:

  1. Spend over $300,000 annually on wood packaging
  2. Want to keep their current vendor, and
  3. Are serious about reviewing their packaging for optimization

The program focuses on material substitution, dimensional redesign, and labor efficiency — unlocking savings without compromising strength or safety. If your volume is enough to qualify for the program, simple changes to your current wood pallets, crates, or boxes can lead to major savings and environmental impact.

If you don’t qualify, we can still review your packaging for free, but we would do so outside of this shared-savings model.

Why Packaging Optimization Matters

Using the same packaging decades “because it works” or “because that’s how we’ve always done it” likely means your package is over-built. If you’ve ever had damage to a part due to mishandling and someone decided to add material to compensate, you’ve likely spent thousands of dollars annually when it was a one-off accident. Packaging tends to be an afterthought or beneath notice in most companies unless there is a problem, yet we find that packaging costs are usually among manufacturing companies’ highest expenses. PackTrim Optimization™ means reducing material cost, finding shipping efficiencies, and reducing packaging labor/assembly. Our team works with your plant managers, engineers, and existing vendors to identify packaging improvements that directly reduce cost and support your sustainability goals.

What We Do

We start with a simple packaging audit and collaborate with your internal teams and supplier(s). Our goal with this program is to identify changes that lower documented and abstract costs through efficiency and waste reduction — without disrupting your existing supply chain.

Material Optimization

We identify areas to eliminate excess material (wood, fasteners, and other packaging materials), reducing direct spend. This is the primary source of measurable savings and the foundation of our shared-savings model. We also consider alternative materials – this can mean testing different wood species or new material types altogether, such as corrugated, metal, or plastic.

Dimension Optimization

We evaluate pallet and crate dimensions to better utilize trailer and container space, increasing load efficiency and reducing freight costs. These results are shared with your logistics team and plant staff for implementation. When dealing with wood, lumber generally comes in 2 foot increments of 8-10-12-14-16′. Many times there are process or cut-lengths that can be optimized for better yield from materials so that we avoid throwing away or paying for waste.

Labor Optimization

We suggest packaging changes that reduce material and/or loading time, improve stacking or handling, and increase plant throughput. While not tied to direct savings, these improvements can add significant value and are documented as part of our final report.

Only Pay for Real Results

We operate on a shared-savings model. Unless there is significant travel involved or additional work outside the scope of the program, your company only pays a percentage of the verified cost savings we help create through the PackTrim Optimization™ Program. All savings are backed by documentation — including vendor quotes, invoices and detailed before-and-after comparisons.

  • No risk. No pressure.
  • Savings are tracked over a 12 or 24-month period.
  • Clear implementation and reporting timelines.

Built for Sustainability

PackTrim Optimization™ supports your environmental goals and contributes to our 1-2-3 Conservation Program (for invoiced amounts). Together, we can help reduce packaging waste and support global forest conservation through our nonprofit partners like Rainforest Trust. Wasteful packaging contributes to unnecessary environmental impact, and our model is here to not only reduce, but to reverse that impact.
